mission is to be recognized as the principal advocate for geology
and the geologic profession in Ohio that promotes high ethical
standards and continuing career development.
Our vision is that the AIPG Ohio
Section will be the representative voice of professional
geologists in the state, will foster public recognition of the
profession's contribution to society, and will encourage its
membership to achieve and maintain the highest technical and
ethical standards.

Date: Jul 29, 2010 Time: 5-8:30 p Organization: AIPG-Ohio Event: David Soller, USGS,, Info through Nat. Geological Map Program: Information Discovery through the National Geologic Map Database
Mr. Soller will introduce the National Geologic-Map Database (NGMDB). The NGMDB allows users to browse and query its various databases, and obtain access to the source information wherever it resides. Existing geologic maps of almost any place in the nation are available through the national database. And, if the maps are in digital format, they are available online in a few clicks! Furthermore, information about the geologic maps (metadata) is also available online in a few more clicks.
Dave Soller is Research Geologist at USGS National Center and Chief of the Congressionally-mandated National Geologic-Map Database Project, which requires that State and Federal agencies develop a standards-based national archive and database of geologic maps. He has worked in numerous research capacities, especially 3-D geologic mapping and GIS-based analysis of surficial deposits, to improve communication with the public and decision-makers. For example, Dave was the lead geologist on the 1991 benefit-cost study "Societal Value of Geologic Maps," which demonstrated to Congress the societal importance of new geologic mapping. In addition, he has served on many information-management committees, and has provided GIS and information-technology consulting to agencies around the world.
Before joining the USGS, Dave held numerous industry and consulting jobs, and earned three degrees in geology. His foremost professional interests are: (1) to improve the quality and accessibility of earth-science information available to the public; (2) to contribute to scientific advances in the earth sciences through development of new methods of quantitative spatial analysis; and (3) to research the three-dimensional distribution of surficial geologic materials.
